The Section for Residents and Fellows-in-Training (SRF) was born out of the Committee of Residents in Training in 2000 to encourage residents involvement in Academy initiatives. All residents and fellows-in-training who are members of the Academy are automatically members of the Section.

Young Physicians are the newest of the three sections of the Academy. Recognizing that the 2000+ young physicians of the Academy are the future of the Academy, in 2013 the Boards of Directors approved the transition of the Young Physician Committee to the Young Physician Section (YPS). The newly formed YPS takes over where the SRF leaves off. Young physicians who are members of the Academy, under 40 years of age or within the first eight years of professional practice after residency and fellowship training are automatically members of the section.
